Gran's 82nd Birthday

I don't have the patience to be a cake decorator, but I wanted to do a traditional cake for my mother-in-laws 82nd birthday, so I made a bit of an effort!!!

In the planning stage i had phone calls of encouragement for the states (thanks Chris) I was researched, planned, pep talked and cajoled into this cake...how could it fail...

A 12 egg sponge cake in a tray bake pan...look at that rise, the oven was on a 170c and I cooked it for 40 - 45 minutes. Why does it do that? I was always told it was because the oven was too hot...but at 170c...do you think so??

Out of the oven and cooling ready to be split and filled with strawberry jam.

Its had its jam barrier, crumb coat and final top coat and scored with the dogs comb (only joking!!!) used my Pampered Chef Easy Accent Decorator to decorate the sides.
A quick glace icing 'Gran' put on the top...

...and then I added 4 sparkler candles!

Only trouble was, by the time he'd lighted the last one the first one had died out. It was all good fun and Gran had a great time. She has 5 sons, 13 grandchildren & 11 great grandchildren and she seen them all bar a few! Now that's a popular Gran if ever I saw one!!!
